#7: The Stoning of Stephen

Stephen the Deacon the First Christian Martyr is Stoned to Death at Jerusalem

Stephen was a deacon in the early church, and he helped serve the widows in the early days. He also made a few enemies, who ended up wanting him dead. His enemies ended up stoning him to death. Most notable among the crowd of people was Saul of Tarsus, who held the coats of the people that killed him. He later became Paul, the man who wrote about half of the New Testament.

One of the most remarkable things about this story is the way that he died. He didn't recant at the end, or yell angry things at the people that were killing him. His last words were a request for God to not charge them for their sin. He also saw the Heavens open before he died, and Jesus was standing at the right hand of God (instead of sitting). It was almost as if Jesus was standing, congratulating him on his good job, and staying strong until the end.

I like this story because it gives us an example of how we should act when facing adversity.
