Brooke's Top 10 Bible Stories - #10

#10: David and Goliath

David and Goliath

Most of us know the story of David, the little shepherd boy that grew up to be king. When he was still a boy, his brothers went off to war. The Philistines were harassing them, blaspheming God. When David came out to give his brothers some food, he noticed Goliath, and wondered why nobody was willing to fight him.

Although David was small, he had faith in God. He knew that God would protect him, even against a large giant like Goliath. He only took five stones into the battle. Perhaps one for Goliath, and the others for his four brothers.

What's interesting is that Goliath fell face forward. Normally, you get hit with something, you fall backwards. Angelic forces must have been pushing Goliath.

#9: Peter Walks on Water

Peter Walks on Water, 1806

The story of Peter walking on water is well known. Who wouldn't want to be able to walk on water? Of course, when Peter gets out of the boat, he loses faith, and starts to sink. When he calls out to Jesus, the Lord saves him, and asks him why he didn't have faith.

Peter at least had enough faith to get out of the boat. Many of us do not. None of the other disciples did.

This story shows me that we can do anything that God wants us to. If God wants us to do something, even if it seems impossible, we can do it, if Jesus is on our side. After all, if he created the universe out of nothing, how hard is walking on water? How hard is anything?

#8: The Ethiopian in the Desert

I think that this Bible story is amazing. Phillip was in Macedonia, and lots of people were turning to the Lord. Then God tells him to ride out into the middle of the desert. Phillip must have been wondering why.

When he got out there, he just happened to run into an Ethiopian who was reading the Old Testament. He didn't understand what he was reading, but Phillip was able to explain it to him. He got saved, was baptized, and then went back home, where he probably told people there about Jesus. It's likely that many of the Ethiopian Christians today were influenced by this one meeting.

This story reminds me a little bit of The Heavenly Man. In China, miracles like this are still happening. In The Heavenly Man, Brother Yun prays for a Bible... and one arrives, in a day when Bibles were illegal to own. These stories demonstrate that sometimes things just don't make sense, but then "coincidences" happen. After all, what are the chances of running into somebody, in the middle of the desert, and they just happen to be reading the Bible? It's never happened to me.

#7: The Stoning of Stephen

Stephen the Deacon the First Christian Martyr is Stoned to Death at Jerusalem

Stephen was a deacon in the early church, and he helped serve the widows in the early days. He also made a few enemies, who ended up wanting him dead. His enemies ended up stoning him to death. Most notable among the crowd of people was Saul of Tarsus, who held the coats of the people that killed him. He later became Paul, the man who wrote about half of the New Testament.

One of the most remarkable things about this story is the way that he died. He didn't recant at the end, or yell angry things at the people that were killing him. His last words were a request for God to not charge them for their sin. He also saw the Heavens open before he died, and Jesus was standing at the right hand of God (instead of sitting). It was almost as if Jesus was standing, congratulating him on his good job, and staying strong until the end.

I like this story because it gives us an example of how we should act when facing adversity.

#6: The Flood

Noah's Ark

We could learn a lot of lessons from Noah's life. He and his family were the only followers of God on the whole planet (and Christians today complain that they feel alone). Not only was he the only follower of God on the planet, he spent 120 years building a big boat on dry land, saying that water was going to fall from the sky and flood the earth, when it had never rained before! Imagine how he was ridiculed.

On top of all that, when the rains started, he spent nearly a year on the boat, before the waters receded enough for him to get out. Then after he got out of the boat, it was just him and his family. It must have been lonely. Adam and Eve, at least, didn't know any other people

I also like the rainbow from the story, where God promised that he'd never again destroy the earth by flood. He also promised that there would always be seasons... although the seasons are more pronounced in some places than other.

Noah is someone that we can emulate in our lives (except for the getting drunk and letting your kids see you naked part). No matter what other people think, we need to keep on doing what is right.

#5: Moses and the Wall of Water

Moses Crossing the Red Sea

Moses had an exciting life. First, he was born to slaves, and the king threatened to kill him. Then he was saved, his mother was paid to watch him while he was still an infant, and as he grew older, he was raised in the palace. He was later exiled for 40 years after he killed someone.

One of the most exciting stories about Moses' life was when God parted the Red Sea for him. The Israelites must have thought that he was crazy, because he went South to escape Egypt, and then the armies were coming after him. It must have been pretty scary, having the Red Sea to the front and a huge army to the back. It must have been even more exciting to see the Red Sea part for them!

Some people say that the Israelites passed through a very shallow part of the Red Sea, but if that was true, then it was a great miracle for all of the Egyptian army to drown in shallowwater.

I believe that Josephus mentions that the Israelites picked up all the Egyptian's weapons after they washed up on the shore. That would explain why a large group of ex-slaves wandering around in the desert had enough weapons to take on the armies in the book of Joshua!

#4: Joseph as a Slave

Joseph was the favorite child of his father, Israel, but that made his brothers jealous. They decided to sell him to some traders that were going by, and Joseph ended up as a slave in Egypt.

Despite all of this, Joseph followed God. He worked hard for his new master, and was eventually promoted to the head of the entire house. Attracting the attention of his master's wife, she tried to seduce him, but he would not have it, because that would be sinning against God, and would be treating his master wrong. That made her angry, and she accused him of behaving improperly, and he was thrown into prison.

Although the story does have a happy ending, much of his life was difficult. He must have been wondering why these bad things were happening to him. Still, he didn't behave like a victim in his difficult circumstances, he did his best, and continued to follow God, despite what was happening to him.

#3: Daniel in the Lion's Den

I like the story of Daniel. He is one of my favorite characters in the Bible. Even though the government passed laws saying that it was illegal to pray, Daniel continued to do what God wanted him to do, even though it would get him into trouble. God saved Daniel by shutting the lion's mouths. When Daniel got out of the lion's den the next day, the king threw the people who had plotted Daniel's death into lion's den, and the lions, who were indeed hungry, ate the people before they even hit the ground.

#2: Jesus' Return

The second coming of Jesus Christ is one of my favorite stories, because it's something that I look forward to. You can read the newspapers almost every day and see signs of prophecy coming true. Heaven will be a great place. Although I look forward to the Lord's return, I do feel bad about the Great Tribulation that the Bible has prophesied. Although the Bible looks like it says that Christians will be taken out of the world before it occurs, you have to feel bad for the people left behind.

#1: Jesus' Sacrifice for Our Sins

Jesus on Cross
No top 10 list of Bible stories could be complete without Jesus, the center of the entire Bible. Although both Christians and non-Christians alike celebrate the baby in the manger, Jesus on the cross is a more important story. Without his sacrifice, we would be lost. Because of Jesus, we can have our sins forgiven.

I like how Jesus loved us until the very end. He could have called angels and saved himself, but he didn't. I know that I don't possess that kind of selflessness, and I don't know very many people who do. We could all learn a thing about the life of Jesus.
